Engine Removal

This weekend will eb the tiem to say godspeed to the stock engine and transmission and for me to start testing engine mounting and such with my 302 in the engine bay.

I would like to remove the engine and trans as one piece. Is this doable from up top?

If so what is the process?
 
pretty easy

remove the normal stuff drive shaft ant tranny end tranny mounts elec. etc

Remove the bonnet depending on your hoist.

undo the 4 bolts holding the engine to the mounts

hook up a hoist with a engine level and support the weight but do not pull.

undo the passenger side mount and lift the engine enough to remove the passenger side mount from the body.

Then you should be able to pull the engine and tranny as one. Swing the engine over to the passenger side to clear the motor mount of the left side.
 
Even a clutch job is easier with engine/transmission removed as an assembly.

Don't forget exhaust. Since you will be installing a different exhaust you culd torch off eth downpipe, although that makes it un usable or sellable. The easiest I've found is unbolting manifold from engine rather than pipes from manifold as the former can be done from on top and the latter (for me) requires access from below.

It is also more of a breeze if you remove radiator and its support as well as oil cooler.
 
I would get a rubber bumper parts car and hack away and see if the 302 is really worth the effort before you go past the point of no return with your good car. I have a buddy with a stalled 302 MGB project with a hacked up firewall and floor area! It may never hit the road again. Proceed with caution! And have fun..Bob
 
Once you remove the engine/traqns in 1 piece, hook your 302 & its transmission onto your engine hoist & try to stuff it in the engine compartment...just to see the size difference.

Also, check the weight difference between your 302 & trans & the original engine & trans...bet your 302 will be heavier which will affect steering.

Excellent suggestions and why I bought a rubber bumper parts car. It just happens to be a presentable parts car :lol:

There is a size difference, and thankfully, but I think you knew that.

With alloy heads and a T5, etc the assembly is lighter than stock. You might not have known that.

Pete specializes in V8 conversions, especially Ford 302, into MGBs.

He can steer you in the right direction.

You will be able to put the 302 block and transmission into the car for a test fit...but the final positioning will not be possible until some minor firewall and transmission tunnel adaptations are made. You'll also need different engine mounts, etc.

I spoke to him for about 30 minutes on Monday, very enthusiastic and highly informative Gentleman.

I plan on using a 1962 Comet mount. I need to call Pete again and ask him the perils of bolting in an engine mount to the frame as opposed to welding. I am sure there is a metallurgical reason not to.

Those engine bay adaptations should not require cutting or welding, more like adjusting some areas. I plan on rethinking the oil pan situation and may go to a dry sump.

I think you will still need to do some transmission tunnel modification.

Additionally, the front crossmember may need some mods with the 302, especially if you do not go dry sump.
 
We'll see about the trans tunnel. It will be a setback as all my planning is aroudn the engine bay.

Re cross member, I saw this sump and my heart skipped a beat but alas it's a 215 :wall:

There is/are a lot of aftermarket parts available for the Ford 302.

Don't give up on the dry-sump idea yet. Have you checked with Summit Racing?

FYI, Their websites offer more options than their catalogues. So if you don't find it in their paper catalogue, try online.
