Engine Removal

I'm in the process of stripping my 59 BE for restoration. I'm ready to pull the 1098 engine and need some advice. Is it better to pull eng & tranny as a unit or individually. If just the engine, is there a trick to clear the front pully with the frame to exit the transmission pilot shaft? Looks like there is not much room for forward movement. Do I keep the transmission bolted in place if only removing the engine?
