Engine rebuild - Gaskets

I just got my crank back in and now I am starting to reassemble the motor. What if any does everybody use for the different gaskets and seals. I have all the gaskets and seals I just didn't know when and when not to use any sealant.

Back plate
Front plate
Timing chain cover
Oil pan
End main caps

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thin film of Hylomar on the paper gaskets and thin film of RTV for pan and timing case cover. You should NOT see any sealant extruding from between the joints on assembly.

For compressible cork ones, just lightly tighten the fasteners to contact and allow the RTV to set before final tightening.

Those are just "tips" for general gasket installation.

The mains caps don't need any sealant.

And welcome to the forum!!!

Brownt,

There are pros and cons for the use of gasket sealant with many arguing the pro side of the argument.

IMHO -- I do not use gasket sealant in rebuilding my engines... although I will use a tiny bit to hold a gasket in place that just doesn't want to stay in place during re-assembly... A good quality gasket used on two smooth, even surfaces just does not need the help and the mess is not worth the effort...

And as Doc has said... 'Welcome to the Forum.'

Thanks for the replies, I was leaning towards trying to stay away from sealants. I have heard that the oil pan gasket should have some "help".

I have belonged to the forum for awhile and have been "lurking" but I just started rebuilding my engine so now I have a need for the knowledge. Thanks.

Welocme & everybody who's posted already is right - & everybody is wrong...& I may be right or wrong depending on what you believe.

I don't use any sealant on any part of the engine except the paper gaskets & I use Hylomar there just like Doc.

I think what you use or don't use is just personal preference. You certainly can't go wrong following the guidance above.
