TR6 Engine Plate Gap?

Hi,

Is there supposed to be a gap as shown below in the front engine plate to the block?

It seems to me that any oil in the timing cover would just drip out, and dirt and water would just come in. Should it be sealed up?

Looks like that gap leads to the sump. If so, it's because the oil that lubes the timing chain needs some way to get back into the pan.

Yes it is a passage for the oil to return to the pan. Its true purpose however is dump oil onto the front sealing block so it can leak like the rear of the pan. This maintains symmetry in the universe. Well, at least on my TR4 anyway.
