I was told that I should change engine oil on my TR-3B to 15W40 diesel.

I would appreciate advice on whether this is a good idea.

Thanks.

What is your current oil pressure running, hot at idle and at cruising rpm?

That will have a large factor on viscosity of oil recommended.

The reason why the recommendation of Diesel oil, is for the engine additive protection. Namely ZDDP, which almost all modern oils have done away with. Even a lot of diesel oils curent formulation has diminished the percentage of ZDDP installed.

There are other oils out there, some fairly new additions, designed for classic and older cars that are coming equipped with additive packages.

I'm sure someone will chime in on Brad Penn oils, and Valvoline Racing. I myself use Yamaha motorcycle oil(Yamalube) as it still has the additive package in it.

If your engine has not been rebuilt recently, you are probably OK using regular oil. If the diesel hasn't had the additives removed yet, they probably will. I know some have. The bad thing is this situation changes constatntly and they don't tell you. I would buy an additive and drop some in with each oil change as a precaution.

Over on Bob is the Oil Guy, they talked about using SLOB. That was an additive sold through Big Lots. Apparently it has lots of zinc and stuff. People are going into the store and buying every bottle on the shelf. I bought six.

You can use STP oil treatment in the red bottle. You may have to order it on-line from a source, because I've never seen it in the stores. Or go to a GM dealer and buy their additive.

GM EOS doesn't have "the good stuff" anymore...

I use Mobil Delvac in all my old stuff (and in my Peterbilt) ...it's commonly available in 15W40 but can also be had in 10W30...you'll have to order it from a Mobil distributor/dealer.

Might do a google search for GM EOS. Brings up a lot of interesting statements about zinc and ph. Also find that GM EOS is not there any more. BUT AC Delco EOS is.

I still think Yamalube is one of the best lubrication features. As it is made with antiwear additives that our oils used to have in them before catalytic convertors and the EPA decided to do away with classic cars.
