I have two engines - the original that came with the car and the one that was put into the car by the PO. Other than the distinction between the "26" and "29" - I don't know what the numbers tell me. Can any experts provide additional detail?

The 29 means the 2.9 liter engine from a 3000.
The 26 means the 2.6 liter engine from a 100-6.
