I am rebuilding an engine from a 1976 MGB parts car for my 1973 B. Unfortunately the engine number plate is missing from this engine. Is there any resource that could determine the engine number if I could provide the VIN from the parts car.
 
Engine number's really irrelevant so long as you 'decipher the clock'....look on the side of the engine & you'll see a round disc with numbers like "76 9 3" with an arrow pointing to one....the code I just gave says the engine was built on Sep 3 '76 or Mar 9 '76 depending on where the arrow points....with that data, you can figure out which engine you have.
 
Interesting! On close inspection, mine reads:
B 26 3 with a slotted screw head apparently holding the disc on. It sure looks like it is a "B" and not an 8 if that matters, but no arrow apparent.
 
Is it like this:

76
8 3

or:
76
3 8

....they're all numbers....
 
Oh, and it's not a screw head... It's cast into the engine... They screwed the little disks into the casting equipment.
 
It is:
26
8 3

If you say that it could not be a "B" then I guess it must be 8 but it is definately 26 not 76
 
Can't be "26"...can you clean the block real good....those 'clocks' were cast in the blocks on the say they were made...they tell us the year, month, & day...B Series engines weren't made in 1926....gotta be 76 for 1976

Have to leave in a few hours and will be out of town for a short period. Thanks for your responses. I'll clean and photograph the disc when I get back and repost.
