Engine Machining Cost

For historical comparison, here are the costs from a local machine shop for my TR4A engine from 1983.

Valve job $20.00
Surface head $13.75
Turn flywheel $12.50
Ream and hone cylinders $14.00
Magnaflux crankshaft $ 6.50
Polish crankshaft $16.50
Reface rocker arms $10.00

I also had some balancing done at a local Speed and Sport Center. I think just the pistons.

Balance $65.00
Remove/replace pistons $ 8.00

First engine that I'd ever worked on and I was a young 22 at the time, but it ran well enough for me to drive it every day for 4 years and put 75,000 miles on it. I'm sure my rebuild would horrify anyone that knew what they were doing since it was just me and my Bentley manual in an old barn, but I was pretty proud when it started and ran!
