Engine installation with tranny?

The thread on pulling the transmission has me thinking about my upcoming engine installation. I pulled the motor and gearbox as one unit and leaning towards doing the same for installation. Seems like this would be easier than installing the gearbox separately but would like to get opinions on the pros and cons and any tips to help guide the beast in on the first go.

Did mine together and it went very easily into place. Had to be a lot easier than lifting the tranny into place and setting it into the pilot bearing. Did not have the body on it yet so that may have helped in allowing more space.

Done it both way - mechanics choice. Some years ago I was at Elkart Lake Vintage race, and one of the Healey racers had engine trouble big time. An hour later the engine was out and on a stand. I just had to look and sure enough he had cut the chassis front cross member making the centre section a bolt in piece. Since I was still under construction with my project I went home and did the same. Now the engine & tranny go in with my eye shut.

I have put my engine in the car without the tranny. I had pretty much trouble to get the main gearbox shaft to enter the clutch. I had fitted a new clutch, and it had been centered with a center tool. I think it is easier to link the gearbox and engine when their both out of the car, then you ease the risk of the engine bending the gearbox main shaft. It all depens on if you get the right lifting equipment, how much space you got, and how many people to help.

Lin - I'll try to take some photo's tomorrow, of both the mods I made cutting out the front cross member, and the tranny installation support, and add them to topic.

Bob, Just curious are you talking about the boxed V brace that extends between the two shock towers or is it in fact the front cross member you made removable??.---Keoke

No it's not the chassis box'd section I cut just the 'V' brace betreen the shock towers. I cut it on both sides, then made up a box section to just slip tightly inside. I insert the box'd sections inside the centre section I cut out, and once in place I slide the box'd section to span the cut and install sixteen [16] 10-32 socket head [ grade 8] screws to hold everything in place.
