Engine in or out ?

Hi Everyone
Not been on the forum for quite a while as been distracted by other toys.
I am just starting to investigate reduced compression on my BN-1 and was just curious how far you can go in terms of rectification without removing the engine:

Clearly the head can come off and valves/stems/seats sorted if required. Consensus seems to be that if not too bad then re grind the old valve seats and not replace with hardened unleaded?
I understand if you remove the sump you can also push the pistons out the top of the block with the head removed?
If required, can you also replace cylinder liners without taking the engine out?
Sounds like if the sump is off you should also check bottom end bearings?
Any other essential checks if going down an engine in 'top end' overhaul?

Many thanks

Ian

No liners, the pistons/rings run directly on cast-iron bores.

So yes to top-end overhaul, including rings and rod brngs. Mains can be done with finesse...

many thanks
Doss anyone know target cylinder compression pressure for a BN1 / 100M while slow cranking a warm engine on the starter with the 100 M modification kit which uses ' high compression'.
Does anyone have different figures with /without oil in the cylinder which reduces pressure loss around the piston rings?

Many thanks
Ian

Last I checked our rebuilt 100M's compression it was 160PSI dry give-or-take on all 4. I think that's pretty good for 8.1:1 compression.
