Hi all-we need help identifying an MG engine-are there any sites you can direct us to that would have a listing? thanks

Check the engine clock, It'll tell you when the block was cast, if it has one. You didn't say what MG the engine was out of. Looks like this drawing and is cast on the side of the block below the dizzy. When you know when it was made, it should be a good indication of what engine it is.

Mornin' Paul.

Yup: what MG? And the "clock" will suggest a time of casting. Some rare instances may have seen a "Gold Seal" replacement, too.

...just tossin' out another possibility.

Mornin to you Doc, I'm not sure I remember the Gold Seal engine. Wasn't that a new factory replacement or a factory rebuilt? Are there many around?

It was a program to replace defective engines under warranty. Some cars came from England with 'em fitted, others were replaced here after delivery and subsequent failure.

right-if we had the car we would know what it was-this engine came to us set up as the power plant to a backyard saw mill yesterday! Too much grease to find any clocks yet.....the # on the engine plate is 10GR TA H17626-thought if there was a website we could look it up for ourselves, but knowing the # now perhaps someone here can tell us what it came from. It is a transverse engine-we were thinking maybe from a mini? Thankyou

Yup! Or p'raps an MG1100, mebbe. 1098cc from that number, if I recall correctly.

ok-thanks-thought it was a 1098-guess we'll need to find something to put it in

Just a thought, I dug in my files and came up with, the MG 10GR series engines were in the MG 1100 MK1 & MK2 up to 1965. 1965 and later was the 10 GRB series which had something to do with a closed circuit breathing system. Also the 10 GB was in the Riley 1100 and the Vanden Plas 1100. Don't know the years. So I would say it's 1964 or earlier. Just a guess.

thanks, guys-Paul that would make sense as it came from an older gentleman who used to rebuild mg cars. Wish he still had some of the things that passed through his shop! He knew we were into them and wanted us to have the engine; we have already gotten a barnful of goodies from him.
Looked up the MK1100-have never seen one in person.

The cars seem to have the same profile. Enough to make you think the bodies were the same, with grill and trim changes. I'm probably totally wrong on this, but they do look a lot alike.

THE RILEY 1100,

THE VANDEN PLAS 1100,

AND OF COURSE THE MG 1100.

Paul,
You're right. These, together with the Austin and Morris 1100s were pretty good examples of BMC "Badge Engineering".
