A friend had an early Pinto with the 1.6 Kent engine, it got great mileage with a manual transmission at least until he totaled it. Most Pintos did come with the 2.0 ohc engine which quickly superseded the Kent which didn't work well in a heavy Pinto with an automatic transmission.
 
That sure looks like a TriumphTR2/TR3 engine to me, with, obviously, a different intake manifold for the carb.
 
Lucca's photo sure looks like a (blue painted) TR3 engine to me.
