Bought one from Harbor Freight last week so I could pull the TR8 engine. Got the 2-ton foldable on sale for $180. Works great, and doesn't take up too much room in my already crowded space.
 
I've NO room, so opted for an overhead beam crossways in the garage. twin 2x6's glued together and thru-bolted at 18" intervals. Double wrapped chain and a 2-ton chain "come-along". The come-along is all I have to stow when not in use. I'd love to have room for a hoist, tho.
 
I got one from Pep Boys (2-ton, foldable) this past winter. I've already used it a couple of times, very handy.

Unique storage solution for the doc

Buy one and loan it to a trustworthy friend. Don't ask for it back until you actually need it. My hoist is back home now, but I'm getting free storage on my cement mixer right now. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

I have a no name brand engine hoist that folds. Took out several engines and also use it to lift things out of the back of my pickup.

I Bought the goodyear racing folder from Sams Club. nice unit. Hides in the corner of the shop well. I seem to remember it being somewhere around $160.

I did that pep boys thing too. $119 and I probably used 6 times in 6 months. Great to have around. You need room though. It has actually made it outside when the weather is nice. I cover it but when it rains I drag it in.

Got one of theirs also! Works fine and was $60 less than Harbor Freight!!!
 
Mickey, since you bought the engine hoist I assume you are pulling the engine out from the top. I used a Harbor Freight chain hoist suspended from a reinforced joist to drop the engine and tranny down the bottom as outlined in the shop manual. Is it easier to take it out the top?

Not having dropped the subframe to remove the assembly from the bottom, I can't compare. It's probably easier, if you can raise the body enough to get all that out from under it. I wasn't sure I could.

Rather than removing the engine and transmission together, I dropped the tranny first, then pulled the engine from above. You do have to support the rear of the engine when you pull the transmission, as it's the rear mounting point. I used a 2x4, turned upright, spanned across the rear of the bonnet opening, just ahead of the scuttle. (Didn't have special tool number XXXXX, as in the manual /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif ) Then, I attached a couple of ratchet straps to the rear lifting eyes to support the rear.

Getting it all back in wasn't too bad, but lining the tranny up and forcing it home was interesting! When it goes back in this time (hopefully soon!), I may try the other way round.

I just bought one of these. But of course it's just for a truck. I have a new 2000 lb 12Volt winch to replace the manual one. In front I have an 8000 lb winch to go with it. Not in the truck illustrated though.

A friend and I went together and bought one 15 years or more ago. It has been well travelled. It usually takes a phone call or two to locate it. You borrow it, you store it. It has saved a lot of trips to the chiropractor.
 
Last year, I bought mine on sale at Tractor Supply Co. for $150, I had a strong friend help me get it in my truck and assemble it. A week later, I brought my MGB home and it jumped forward on the dolly when I pulled into the driveway. I used the hoist to pull the car off the dolly using the shipping crate tie-down tabs that were under the bumper! Now the hoist resides halfway inside my project Mustang. With the door off, it just slides under and fits fine! I also got a $20 Harbor Freight load leveler.
 
Mine is also the foldable hoist...takes about 2'Wx1'D of space along a garage wall....I do like that pickup hoist though...may need to visit HF to see if they have one!
