Guy at Vintage Restorations (Mount Airy, Md) just told me the head & crank passed magnafluxing.

Gonna pick up a totally unmolested 1622 w/ proper head casting # Friday for $760.00

Then I'm going to do unspeakable things to it this winter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

sounds like he's going to go NC-17 on us.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Actually I think I'm going VP-12

Cam that is.......As in APT cam.
276 duration
.293 lift x 1.4 - 0.016 = .394
10-1 compression
And a usable range from 1900-6800
(max out at 7250 so I'll set the limiter at 7000)

Or do you think that is too light?

Congrats, Dave!

...and we expect to see th' lurid, unchristian details chronicled here, along with PHOTOS!

You KNOW we like to ~watch~.

I really hate to show my ignorance, as if I don't regularly to Kathleen, but what in the heck are you guys talking about. Porno cylinder head work??? Jack

Think he found a spare engine and is going to warm it over.

yup... certainly talking about head jobs here... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Dave, Are you going to burn pump gas in this engine? Is 93 octane high enough or are you going to doctor it up? What's the HP output? PJ

I have 3 requirements for the engine.

1) Must run available "high test" w/o detonating.
2) Should tick-over w/o stalling at 1000 RPMs
3) I don't want to smoke the clutch every time I take off.

125 hp should be OK.......Sure I'd like more.

BTW....I have another 1622 block I'd like to turn into a bomb but, not at this time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The VP 12 should do what you want, make you a good solo/track day cam, while being liveable on the street.
Get the good APT lifters to go with the cam.

Gonna go w/ their new ">60 short bucket followers" titanium push rods & spring retainers.

Think I'm going to stay w/ stock rockers if I can find someone to reprofile them properly.

I've used several sets of those lifters, they are good stuff. Just curious, how much are titanium pushrods, you can get custom length chrome moly pushrods made pretty darn cheap.

OK , so I looked at the two spare 1622 engines I have. They have the '16' cast in the head. But 1588 and 1622 heads are very different. The 1622 is almost identical to the early MGB head in that it uses the same valves. My question is how can you tell them apart without removing them?

You don't have to take the head off.......

The first # is the casting number........The second is the casting date.
(3 Mar 61 or 10 Oct 61 ???)
The dead give-away is the 16 on the end.

Anyway.......You must be one of those people who hoard rare parts so people like me have to drive 4 1/2 hours (one way) to find em.
(No biggie......I got to eat some blue crabs in Maryland for my trouble)

Yea......Your head is worth $350.00, Crank $225.00 and the 1622 block about $125.00

1622 stuff is getting impossible to find.

Let me know if you want to get rid of the stuff you have......
I'd like to have some spare parts.........(Not hoarding) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
