I am dismantling my brother's mg engine to rebuild while he is overseas in Iraq. Do I need to remove the rear plate from the block to pull out the crank and cam shafts? Also, what will be the correct color to paint when assembled? He has a single weber downdraft, I am trying to talk him into twin HS6's or the nifty Kehin set-up from PRI (?) down in southern oregon.
 
Yup. Off with its plate. Much easier to access rear main cap, crank removal.
 
Phil, the color will be dependent on the year. Early engines were painted a reddish maroon color, and later ones are black. I don't know when the change occured.

this one was black. came out of a '74, but smog control has been removed.
 
What's the number of the engine..is it an 18V, a GH, GB, etc..?
 
The first characters on the block are 18V584Z
 
18V is painted black.
 
OK, I ran into another puzzler. how do I get the cam shaft out of the block. There is a bevelled gear that meshes with the oil pump drive gear on the camshaft. Located in the block between cylinders #3 & 4, but prevents the withdrawal of the shaft from the block. I can get the camshaft partways out, but can't get past the idler gear in the block. What's its purpose anyways?
 
You need to pull the distributor drive before you can remove the camshaft. Once the distributor drive is out the cam should come right out.
