Can someone tell what the original engine color was on the 1976 Midget, US version. The one I just bought has a blue rebuilt engine and I would like to return to the correct color.

Thanks

Funny, my '78 Midget 1500 has a blue cover, too.
Should it be black?

You mean the valve cover is blue? I believe the standard color for valve covers was an orange. I believe its reasonably close to the high temp Ford orange you can buy in spray cans at autozone or similar locations. Of course, I am not saying this is an exact match, but was good enough for my purposes. I believe its actually darker then the original.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. Yes my '78 Midget 1500 has a blue valve cover.

interesting. I have a picture of what i believe to be an accurate restoration of a 76 which has an orange valve cover. I wonder if they changed it at some point. Also, my spare engine came from a 75 and has the same orange as my 76 did.

Thanks everyone for your input. It seems that the concencus is black for the engine body and orange for the rocker arm cover. BTW I obtained an original sales brochure for the 76 midget and it has a picture of the engine compartment with a nice shiny orange rocker arm cover...

Thanks again
