Engine clacking at 4k rpm.

And naturally I will disagree (sort-of).
You don't need a geiser of oil coming out from the block but you sure need to have enough that if the starter is run for about 10 seconds then you have a horrible mess on the floor! If after 10 seconds of starter motor (block only, no head) there isn't a LOT of oil mess then there is a blockage somewhere, and a problem.

Re: Engine clacking at 4k rpm. The CULPRIT!

Guys.
What a trip.
This image is the exact same one as previous in the thread, but I've pointed out some areas to better explain what went wrong.
In short, the pedestal on #1 wasn't down all the way, even after torquing the head nuts to spec, there was about 1/16" gap between the cylinder head and the pedestal. Small enough for all the oil to ooze out of the sides instead of going up.
I was in the process of putting it all back together when I noticed the nuts on the studs weren't flush, eeehh?
DOH!!!

Re: Engine clacking at 4k rpm. The CULPRIT!

I dunno Kim, I put them back on after the head work over winter, so I'm to blame. They can't go on any other way except for the right way (so I thought!) and I haven't had any other rockers in my possession, sooo, I made a boo boo, couldn't find it, 80 posts later it was staring at me.
It's pretty clear that #1 and #2 were getting oil from the 'ooze' and #3 getting less and #4 hardly any just through the physics of what goes on under a valve cover.
I promised the car I wouldn't autocross it again in that state.

Re: Engine clacking at 4k rpm. The CULPRIT!

Look them over,I bet something is swapped, look for detents or something on the base of them that they fit in and I bet you will figure it out. A swap is the most likely thing.

Re: Engine clacking at 4k rpm. The CULPRIT!

I would bet, in fact I was thinking about it this afternoon that I wondered if the pedestals got swaped somehow during the rebuild.

However, that said we should have been able to tell from the burnt on oil at one end and none at the other. Very obvious when you know the answer.

Have you tried it with the correction. Does oil go all the way to 4 and run down the pushrod holes. all of them?

Re: Engine clacking at 4k rpm. The CULPRIT!

Baz, now is the time to double check all gasket surfaces for residue. Lay out all the bolts confirming what bolts go where, etc. So when the stuff arives you will be ready. I did this several days ago with my dads subaru engine that we hope to start going back with tomorrow. An A series is so easy and simple compared to a soobie engine where you have to unscrew plugs and remove the wrist pins from the pistons just to be able to split the crankcase and get the engine apart to get to the crankshaft and connecting rods and bearings.

Re: Engine clacking at 4k rpm. The CULPRIT!

Just wanted to throw out another question on rocker anatomy.
The Grub Screw.
It's now apparent that my assembly hasn't had (in the duration of my ownership) a locking plate for the grub screw. All pictures and diagrams I've seen suggest this holds the grub screw in the fore/aft position on #2.
How will that grub screw affect oil distribution, if any?

A new (oem) rocker assembly is imminent, so I'm not worried about this current condidtion.

Re: Engine clacking at 4k rpm. The CULPRIT!

If the grub screw is allowed to back out or is not tight the oil pressure in the shaft will be "relieved" past it. Oil will not get to the places it should. The lock-tab keeps the 'plug' (and shaft) in proper position.

Thanks Doc. If that shaft flexes just a mm or two, the oil holes don't line up and I've got problems south of there.
Like I said, I'm not worried, have a new one coming, just want to learn from mistakes.
