Engine bay temps

I've been thinking about overheating issues and wish I'd really given this issue more thought while it was hot here. I've installed a thermo in the engine bay close to where the carb intake is and have been suprised at the temps, even while it is cool. Yesterday it was almost to 70 and the engine bay temp was 109. The little driving I've done with the thermo has shown temps 25 to 30 over the outside temps. Has anyone done something simular to this. If nothing else, I think I need enginge intake tubing to cooler air, the Moss SC carb is back and above the exhaust.

Sometimes it's better not to know. When you think about it, the air exiting the radiator is likely to be 160 to 190 degrees. Any air intake located under the hood is likely to be pretty hot. The only real solution is, as you say, a separate carb air intake ducted from in front of the radiator.

Since air density & potential power increase about 1.5% for each 10 degree F intake temperature drop, some power increase may be expected also.

Lots of racers do this & some factory cars came stock this way.

When I drive my midget in cool weather (45 degrees and cooler) I have to keep the choke pulled or the the supercharger leans it out waaaaay too far. It almost needs a needle change for cool weather. Eventually the engine bay will hold enough heat to take the choke off, but it takes a bunch of driving to reach that point.
