Just read it a few moments ago, she was queen all my life, a reinforcement of the sad truth that all things change and nothing remains the same. Remarkable lady that led a remarkable life.

Condolences to our British friends that have lost their monarch, although I think the role she played transcended political boundaries.
 
I was impressed when I read how she worked as a mechanic
during WWII.How many Queens would have that on their resume?
I wonder if it's time for Britain to stop financially supporting
the Royal Family.They're among the wealthiest people there.

I was always impressed by that too. How many queens would be willing to get grease under their nails? Tells me she had her head on straight.
 
Her first televised Christmas message, 1957. A lot of what she says here could very well apply today IMHO.

 
I think it was 1953 when we watched her coronation on TV. I was just a kid, but I still thought it was quite a spectacular event. She was so young and also very pretty! She was loved by so many people! May she rest in peace.

I was -1 when she was coronated.

Well, not Charles III yet. He's become king, but may choose any name he wishes when he's crowned.
 
Just saw he has decided on Charles III. And she was only a princess during the war when working as a grease monkey. Didn't become queen until '52. Amazing lady and amazing life.

If I recall, after Buckingham Palace was bombed by the Luftwaffe, the Queen Mother said "Now we can look at the East End in the face."

(She was quite a lady too.)

Paul - our family watched that on TV too. Interesting story of how the USA got to see the (filmed) coronation ceremony:

Canadian Broadcasting Company had films of the coronation flown to Canada on RAF jets. US networks NBC and CBS made arrangements to have films flown in relays back to the United States for same-day broadcast, but used slower propeller-driven aircraft. The struggling ABC network arranged to re-transmit the CBC broadcast, taking the on-the-air signal from the CBC's Toronto station and feeding the network from ABC's affiliate in Buffalo, New York State, and, as a result, beat the other two networks to air by more than 90 minutes, and at considerably lower cost.

RIP. Shocked, perhaps not surprised at the news. This mornings news discussed her getting medical attention - then this afternoons news. Wonderful person. Thanks for sharing your memories and the great pictures of her “in action”.
