any suggestions on where to connect the power source? 1967 tr4a.
 
temporarily ran it tru the + side of the coil... is this an unsafe way todo it?

Probably OK, it just increases the load on the ignition switch. If the switch is in top condition, it should handle it (possibly depending somewhat on how much current your pump draws). Dad's TR3A has been wired that way for several decades, and AFAIK is one of the few areas that hasn't been a problem.
