So, I seem to have a ground in my 7-8 wiring circuit - purple out, closest to the firewall. I have blown three fuses in very short order.

Here's what happens. I install the fuse and it definitely does not blow right away. Sometimes it has lasted for at least a day so, it's not a permanent ground wherever it is.

This is not as critical a fuse, running interior lights, cigarette lighter, horn etc. - though having a horn would be nice.

The only things I am using are the horn & the doors - I presume this should therefore be my starting point. However, the horn is on a relay though it is still powered by the purple wire.

any diagnostic tips?

I had this same thing happen to me last year at least very similar mine was on the 69. I ended up having a short under the dash once I found that it never happened again. I dont know where the wire came from or went to I can look and let you know tomorrow, but that probably wouldnt help you.
 
Next time it happens, dont open the doors, climb out. Open the hood and disconnect the wires running from the fuse. Check from that wire to the frame for continuity. If you have it, then open the doors. Does it go away? Then go through everything connected to that wire and turn it on and off all the wile checking for continuity to isolate the problem child and when you find it, start tracing wires, it will be a bad connector or bare wire.

I had intermittent horn issues recently too. Bullet connector behind dash in my case, just wasn't seating well. I'd go over the horn circuit, disconnect and reconnect, wiggle the wires checking the fuse frequently, see if you can induce it. You'll either make it happen and find the issue or you'll solve it without ever knowing exactly what it was. I also had a heck of a time with my headlights which turned out to be a bullet end was loose on the wire and not making good connection, the wiggle test finally revealed that one.
