electric midget?!

Here's another one that looks promising.:

I've been studying electric for a couple of months. For a commuter, it's not a bad way to go, if you have the range.
In the meantime, I'm looking at "super tuning" my Sprite. I think I can get above 50MPG, wit a few mods.

Guys, I been getting 38mpg just piddling around going to the store and taking trips up the parkway pulling hills and things. This is the second tank and it is the same. I think I will be getting mid 40s on the highway, when I get all the bugs cleared up. Its the gearing. See I did all the math and came up with the gear I wanted for gas mileage. This was years ago, I am a cheap bastard  The spriget 1275 has max torque at 3000rpms. I have 66mph at 3000 rpms in 5th gear. I like to run around 60 on the interstate around here because of the winds and all at higher speeds. 5th is my gas mileage gear, you can't change into it until you are at 45 and it won't push the wind beyond 65. The car will run much faster in 4th, but 5th is my gas mileage gear if I stay within that range. Got some more plans for this one and some others for the junker midget.

Met a Dr. at nephew's graduation party who is buying one of these. https://www.ampmotorworks.com/index.html. Buy brand new Saturn Sky and rip out drivetrain to become almost Tesla like. This one is interesting to say the least. Range not as great as a Tesla but 1/2 the price. For the guy who commutes across town and drives a big honking SUV right now sounds like the ticket.

My top secret EV fantasies involve ripping out the whole drive train including the differential. Building a tube frame in which to mount two 10hp/ 40hp peak direct drive DC series wound motors in place of the differential. Rigging the suspension will be complicated, but who needs a transmission when each motor will put out 90ft.lbs. of torque at 0(ZERO!)rpm. The reduction in weight without all that cast iron in there should allow for a decent hybird lead acid and l-ion battery back. Couple that with a Sebring bonnet, and you are good to go.

All I need is $8000, a couple hundred man hours, and some formal engineering training and I will be set.

I actually found a site once of a guy who converted a Midget to battery power. It was a bit scary considering the number of lead-acid batteries he had installed. He beefed up the suspension and body, but still had stock brakes! If you could use Li-Ion batteries, a Midget would be terrific for EV conversion.
