Elan waterpump

Since the Elan and Twin Cam Europa have the same engine, I think I can comment. As far as I know, unless the engine has been converted to a front cover that accepts the cassette water pump, you must pull the head. Obviously, the cassette replacement is much easier on the Elan. I recently had my front cover changed after pulling the engine/transmission as a unit after the water pump failed.

I'e replaced Europa waterpumps (stock ones) from the underside, no pulling the head. Takes a bit of dexterity but it can be done. Drop the oil pan and fiddle the bolts out to pull the front cover down. Not a job done without a lift, unfortunately. But I've done it in a five hour time at the dealership I worked for in the late '70's.

Helps if you've ever done the job before on an Elan.
