Edelbrock Carb on my 8

Love it......should have done it years ago.....
Anyway, runs great but a little rich I think, strong exhaust odor and a little smoke(no oil). Anyone with this setup had this issue? Is jetting down the carb the way to go? RPI suggested 62/52 needles and 0.80 primary jets...this sound ok?
Thanks

Didn't go this route?

It all depends on the displacement of the engine and the size of the carb. Cam choice and whether your running mechanical or vacuum secondaries also play into it. You can mess around with the jets till you get it close, or you can take it to a tuner with a dyno and get it as close as possible. You will never get it perfect. You need FI for that, but you can get it close enough to not stink if the carb is sized properly. For a 3.5, you really need a 390CFM. 4.0s and bigger, you can get away with a 500 or 600CFM, but they are oversized non the less. See what sizes are in the carb now and go from there. You probably can find a jet chart based on engine size for your carb on the manufacturers web site. Just a thought.

Guess I got lucky with the Holley when I did mine/now Paul's! (Actually, Woody had it all figgered out for me beforehand.)

Nice....
I do have a Holley 390 but I used an Edelbrock on a few other projects and liked the trouble free operation but they were bigger engines. I don't mind jetting it down a bit, it appears easy to do. I may call Edelbrock's help line to see what they suggest...

I've never run any emission tests on it, but it runs and idles just fine, so I'm happy. I wish the triple ZS carbs were this simple.....

FI is!

I'll have some test data soon. Dyno Day is coming up and I'll be registering mine tonight for a run that day.

I'm very interested to see how it fares!

FYI, I built the engine per Woody's recommendations: Mild Sid Erson cam; headers; pistons were .020 over (I think...); heads were "dressed", but not ported; Edelbrock intake and Holley 600 CFM carb jetted per Woody's numbers; and Mallory Unilite distributor.

I'm registered so we'll all know on May 14th what this one shows.

I had a Holley on mine originally and it was very fickle. I went to the Eldebrock and have had 8 years of fickle free driving. It is probably too much carb for the car but manages

Pat, that can be the case, but Mickey has the right jets in this one and it is fine.

Paul, you might want to reserve that statement till you get it on the dyno and see just how "right" the air fuel numbers are. You can put a 600 on a lawn mower and make it run, making it run right is a little bit harder. If you get a chance, read up on some of the stuff Dan Jones has posted about carb jetting and carb sizing on Rover V8s.

I know I have been off the forum too long when people start calling me Pat again PATR8 = Pennsylvania TR8

My name is Scott

No leave it. I get a chuckle all the time when I see the major called Pat.
Made that mistake a while ago.
Scott, when will it become Colonel?
