1980 Tr7 has a fuel injection system that is managed by a Bosch ECU. I just acquired this car and found out there were not a lot of these made. My question is reliability and should I stock up on ECUs for the future and what should I pay for one?
 
You should pick up at least one carbed intake system from one of the other 49 states not named California for when you finally get so frustrated with the FI system you decide to rip it out. They are very easy to come by, and fairly easy to understand. A nice improvement would be to use 1.75" SUs instead of the ZS carbs. If you ever come across another complete FI system, you should buy it if you plan on keeping what's there.
 
So far that is my plan is to keep it. Seems like the PO had little to no problems with it and it has 101k on it.
 
The Bosch system is very reliable and when problems happen, pretty easy to diagnose. I've had mine for about 7 years now and have had only one problem with it that was easily fixed. I hang out on another wedge board, and I read all the time about people having issues with their carbs, rarely with the FI.

With that said, I'd say if you can pick up spare bits and pieces at a good price, do it. I have a complete extra system (including intakes and all the sensors and an ECU). Just in case. If your ECU goes out, they are pricey from a vendor....better to have one "on the shelf."

As of 9:45 pm Fri night it started on it's own for the first time.

Saturday morning I will get plates and drive it for the first time.
 
With out turning the key.
How you gonna fix that.
Wasn't there a movie about that?
 
My 81 FI is ultra reliable, original ECU still working fine. I've owned my car since 2001. I wouldn't trade the FI for a boatload of those pathetic metered fuel leaks ie: carburetors.
