ebay wheels

What is a good price for stock wheels for a TR6? I need a set and I am following a set on ebay. I figure shipping at about $100.

I would like to have a nice set of after market wheels but that is not in the budget right now.

any help appreciated, Pete

Pete-

Not sure about pricing, I normally would shoot for something around $20-25 a rim but that could be wishful thinking these days.

Not sure if it important to you, but the rims for a 69 TR6 were different than the later TR6 rims - they had pegs on the rims so you could mount the Rostyle hubcaps that were on the TR250 and first year TR6s. Only important if you are trying to get back to stock for that year - and it doesn't sound like you are anyway..

It is extremely difficult to find stock steel wheels that do not have excess lateral runout. Over their service life most stock wheels have been sprung by tire changers trying to dismount the tires from the wrong side. Because of the off-set of the drop center they must be dismounted from the backside rather than the more usual front. The end result is vibration that balancing of the tires will not eliminate. Most guys I know installed alloy wheels because they could not get rid of the shakin'. I recommemd that you do not pay too high a premium for wheels on ebay as you most likely will have to buy a bunch of wheels to get a straight set and the freight is pretty expensive due to the weight. Chances are the seller took them off because of vibration. Just my 2 cents.

I would agree with Mike. Save your money and buy alloys.
I saw a set of Mini Lite 8 spoke reproduction wheels last weekend that a club member recently purchased new for under $500.00. He hasn't had them long, so I don't have any feedback but they looked good.
Moss carries the KN wheel that is less expensive than Panasports. A friend has been running tham for a while and likes them.
The alloy wheels are much sturdier and truer than the original steel wheels. It is hard to find original wheels that are true. I think you would be throwing your money away buying stock steel wheels from any source where you can't personally inspect them.

I'm having the same problem. My tire guy recently said, "Look, man, you really need new wheels; the ones you have are about to throw rubber." And, he said for the same reasons listed here: ignorant tire guys in the past mounting and dismounting incorrectly. I saw the ones on eBay, too, and was a bit wary of them.

I really don't want new wheels that look much different from stock (racers, etc.). What do you think looks the most original being offered today?

Doug, do you know where your friend purchased the wheels? That sounds like an option.

The wheels that I have on my car now are not stock. They do not have the pegs on them. It has the later style center covers.

Thanks, Pete
