Ebay payments fun

Good question. But as there are thousands of negative comments in the ebay "community" forums, I'm betting it's not a scam.

But you raise a good point: if I give ebay my bank info, I'm creating just another entrance point for hackers to get what they want - or at least to screw up data for millions of people. About ten years ago, someone somehow got my credit card info and charged a weekend in NYC to it. Had to close the account and start another - and when you've got automatic payments being charged to the old account, it causes a lot of headaches trying to get all those accounts switched over.

Not Ebay, but last year one of my brothers got notified by the school he teaches at that they needed him to verify a request to change his payroll deposit to a new back, in Nigeria. So they were able to stop it before anything happened and he opened a new account with the bank to get away from the used numbers. They never figured out how whomever it was got the school payroll information and his passwords but my guess is an uncaught hack or keystroke logger.

Still puzzled at the problem. If the buyer chooses to pay using PayPal, why would ebay need your bank account info? PayPal already has that info (and I've used PayPal for over ten years w/o problem).

If buyer choose to pay using an ebay payment system (not PayPal), so be it. But if buyer uses PayPal ... why is ebay even involved in that?

Inquiring minds want to know!
Thanks.
Tom M.
Ebay no longer owns PayPal. I think they realize that they made a mistake and are trying to reclaim the piece of the action they lost when they sold PayPal a few years ago. The problem is, is that guys like us have been happy with PayPal for years now, use it for multiple things, and don't want to give Ebay access to our banking information when PayPal is so easy to use and is so versatile.

I've bought at least a half dozen items from eBay over the past year and they have never asked me for my bank account information. Sounds a little funny to me.

Paul, it's only for sellers. If you are just using it to buy, nothing has changed.

Thanks, Walter, didn't know that.

Even before the PayPal sale, years before actually, I've recommended any sellers to establish a separate checking account for the E-bay sales. And keep as little as possible in it.

I have a checking account just for weird crap I don't want going to my main accounts.

Not sure what picture you were trying to link to, but apparently tripod doesn't allow hot-linking of images.

I've been to Millinocket. Fishing in Moosehead Lake and the Moose River. We caught several Salmon! Largest was just under 7".

As we've discussed before in the Pub, ebay has decided not to default to PayPal for buying and selling.

I just sold a lawn care tool. Message from ebay "Your item has sold and the buyer has paid".

No record at PayPal, and buyer says "yes, I've paid". Just after I got the ebay message above, I got another email from ebay saying I haven't updated my account information, so any payments I receive are being held.

I went to ebay, saw the "alert - you need to update your account information". Clicked that link, and ebay asked for my bank routing number, my checking account number, my name "as on the account". Also said "your name must match the information in your ebay account".

No way am I going to give ebay my personal bank information - so looks like I can't get paid. Buyer said he already sent payment through ebay. Ebay will only pay directly to my bank account. I, and buyer, can't cancel the payment unless I enter my bank info.

yeesh - with PayPal it was so much quicker, and I've had no problems with PayPal since I opened the account 15 years ago.

PS - if you give ebay your bank info, you also have to agree to give ebay permission to call you, email you, text you, etc. for "any activities related to your account"

I *might* continue using ebay for finding stuff I need, but sure won't be using ebay for selling any more. They're pushing out us small guys, and making things easier for the big guys.
ebay has changed rules so many times, they have ruined it. I've shut down selling due to the last year, as these new rules came about. they had my bank information already to charge monthly fees to, but you had to update so your sales get paid directly to your checking account. Paypal was so much better, and that also was upsetting when they did it. 20 years ago i took checks never one problem. I updated, had a few small sales slip thru, so processed them, small items I could have postman take. But I shut down, living so isolated, for fear of going into the PO or Fed Ex, during the spring and everyone just staying home. I don't care for anything where they have access to automatic payments, you think its safe then hear huge companies were hacked, 25 million accounts were at risk, etc. etc. I think once set up you are safe with ebay.

I'm phasing out my ebay items.
Last sale wound up costing me about 20% in fees.
I did complain that I had to pay ebay for shipping when I want to use PayPal.
They did change that but I'm still getting out.

Are you sure it was from Paypal? I get numerous attempts at phishing. Check the emails return address.
