This car:

ebay#: 270120179436
https://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=270120179436

is for sale locally. I really don't need it, and I've got a Bugeye in progress right now, but I've got a soft spot for the 1st gen GT6. Going to try to see it tomorrow when I'm in the city for a meeting.

And no, I haven't mentioned this to my wife yet. That would be silly. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

1st gen. GT6 was my dream car as a junior in high school in '66-'67. Would still like to have one, but can't justify it... not really... Can I? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

Drew, it looks as if it could be quite a good deal. Check carefully the entire car for rust, for rust, and -- oh yeah -- for rust. If it really is just footwells, no problem! Overall, it looks to be a pretty original and unmolested car, judging by pictures.

Wise man!

Drew, my humble advice to anyone who is "thinking" about the purchase of a GT6: GET IT! These are rare cars, especially one in decent (i.e., no or little rust) condition. In fact, it's very difficult to find nice examples (again, no rust) today, period. So if you're considering a GT6, you'd better buy a good example if one presents itself. Local ones are a big plus, too.

As Andrew indicated, above, all that really matters about restoring a GT6 is rust. Rust will bust your budget. Practically everything else is easy to restore. Footwell rust is not expensive to abate. But if there's a fair amount of footwell rust (and the photos seem to show this), it's my experience that there's probably rust elsewhere.

Very smart not to tell the wife. Just buy it and then tell here that it "followed" you home.

Good luck, let us know . . .

I agree. Don't pass it up. Easy car to work on, parts are available, and you'll have a blast driving it when done. There aren't many MKI's out there. Mine gets a lot of attention where ever I go.

My GT6 is also a '67. Ours gets very little use as we have two kids... and therefore, not enough seats. The eBay car looks to be in very good shape. Look at the sills and check the battery box and floor under it. If those appear solid and you don't see other severe rust-through spots it will be a great project car.

Of our two LBCs, I much prefer the GT6 on the highway. It's pleasant to sit in, will run all day long, and has a nice throaty exhaust without being deafening.

It would be hard to pass up a car in the condition shown in the auction photos. Buy it and tell your wife it's for her!

It looks pretty good from here. But like they have said, have it checked out.
Dennis

Thanks all for the thoughts. I'm guessing this one will go too high for me, but I'll probably still try to take a look at it. I'm not really looking for a GT6, this one just sort of came up. Very elegant little cars, and I certainly wouldn't mind the more powerful engine here in the mountains.

Tom, what's my car doing in your garage?
I better run up and make sure the car is still where I left it!
Oops, not mine. I have the European front lamps on it. Rear ones too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif
Actually, Drew, I think it would be a nice addition to the stable. Everyone should have a LBC tintop for those cold, rainy days.
Overdrive would be a plus, but ditch the non original steering wheel.
Jeff

Jeff, when this picture was taken it still had wires. Shortly after I replaced the wires with American magnesium Silverstones. That was right after I spun the splines and lost a wheel. And since I sold it in '76, it is possible that my car could be in your garage.

Tom, I bought mine from the original owner in '89. It still has wires on it, but I'm undecided whether to keep them or not. If I ever finish the resto! I haven't touched it in about 8 or 9 years, and I could finish it in about 80 hours.
Too many projects!
Jeff

I thought Tom's car was mine until I saw the white-wall tires. Mine has wing mirrors instead of door mounts. We got ours from the original owner also... my father-in-law. Jeff, I didn't realize your's was white too.

Doug, I painted mine the original #19 white, inside and out.
It still has the tires that were on it when I bought it, Continental white walls. One of these days I'll finish it.
Jeff

May still go look at it today, but it's up to about $1500 now, too much for me.
