Anyone ever buy one of those Fuel Tank Senders on Ebay for $40? I just bought one for my BJ8 and I was wondering if anyone has any idea whether it is any good or not?

My original sender is shot.. the front case has become a victim of galvanic corrosion from the lead wire.... bye bye /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif ... although JB weld has done the trick and fixed to sender body temporarily, the tank needle is jumping a bit so I think the lead is still shorting through the sender body /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
 
Hi Alan, Nope have not used that item. However, the gas gauge needle in the cars jump around anyway as the circuit is not damped. You might try connecting a ground wire from the sensor housing to the car's chassis in case a poor ground is also influencing the reading on the gauge.---Keoke

Yes I know the needles jump around with the gas sloshing around the tank, that's not what I'm talking about. What I mean is the needle, from time to time, has a little conniption and does a complete spaz-out and starts shimmying back and forth like a sailor FOB on shore leave at a bikini competition. It's shorting out from time to time... but just curious if I should worry about it or not.
 
healynut, yes i would worry about those sailors, /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif having taken apart and repaired/calibrated several fuel gages youd be surprised how fragile the internals are however i dont think this "jumping" around will harm the unit in the short term, as long as they dont receive an over voltage. that would be the killer. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

I agree with Keoke about the ground wire.

It seems that the same factory guy that forgot to install

enough fuses to protect the wiring, also forgot the ground

wire for the fuel sender. It doesn't cost much to give it a

try. Was his last name Lucas ?
