ebay crazies!!!!

Mike:

I have a set of factory replacements (from the dealership)on my BE and the gauge is so much thicker then what you see available now a days.

LOLOL!

I put the first bid in on that, when it was $10. My high bid was $71. I figured that was the moss list price for the outer rocker and I would be getting the inner for "free". I was REALLY suprised when the other bidder came along and quickly drove it UP! WOW! Actually the guy has the other side on ebay too. I have a bid in on it. I was wondering if the same guy was going to bid it up too! But yeah, CRAZY!

But I guess that begs the question. Whats the best place to get quality panels. I would rather spend a few bux more and get good fitting ones, rather than cheap ones I have to beat.

It is my understanding there are two primary manufacturers: SteelCraft, and Heritage. and Ashley Hinton makes some as well.

I've had some from each. I've seen good, bad, and ugly from all three... or maybe it was just because of what I was fitting it to?

I had em esniped at 72 dollars.

Is there anywhere cheaper than Victoria British to buy these?

My car sort of has a giant gaping hole in the driver's side after I hosed about 10 pounds of gravel and dirt out of where you'd normally have a rocker panel.

I have a pair I took off my car a few months ago. I will give them free for just the shipping charge. (That might be substantial for you guys in California.) You can see pictures of them on my site (below). The edges are a bit rusted, but the main panel is fine. They were replaced many years ago but the car was never driven. If anyone wants better pictures, just pm me, or I'll post them here.

If I was buying panels I'd get them from BMH simply because they have the original tooling. They might be more expensive than other companies, but knowing that some of the workers there are original employees of MG/AH/BL justifies it I think.

Man... I suppose it's all a matter of perspective. My VW Rabbit panels are two or three times as expensive, when I can get them... Really, we're spoiled, as far as parts support for these LBCs is concerned!

I'm about to post a new set of inner and outer rockers for both left and right side. Made by Steelcraft I believe. Jack Bacon has first dibs until the end of the week. Anyone else interested before I post on ebay this weekend let me know. Photos available

Duncan: VAG are famous for their parts supply, if you ever have difficulty finding a bit I'm sure a trip to your local VW dealership will come up trumps

I gave a brand new set of these to the metal man about 3 years ago cause i couldn't give them away. i agree with the silly ebayers.

Pete - if you have a look at the VW blog in my signature... almost all the Rabbit parts are NLA at the stealership(unlike my MB of the same vintage). I've had to source panels from Denmark, South Africa, Germany, the US, the UK, and Canada.

I did manage to get a front apron from my local dealer (since it was common to the Golf convertibles up until '92 or so) for the bargain basement price of about $400. They quoted me about $700 each for floor panels. (I managed to restrain myself from punching the parts manager.)

Not to take anything away from the craziness of ebay!
