I have replaced many later Midget tail lamps with the early 2 piece ones. I think they just look nicer.
It's pretty much a direct bolt in replacement.
I am not sure if it was old to new or new to old but one way you have to enlarge one of the holes just a bit. It really doesn't matter since it will not be see with either lamp.
Check first to ensure the plinth for the lights matches up with the new lens, sizewise and in the location of the bulbs/ reflectors. Other than that, they should fit, I just seem to remember that the backing plate differs.

You have to have the entire early assembly...then, all you have to do is bolt up & wire them in...oh, lights are in different positions inside housing so wiring will go to different locations...just check the wiring diagram
