Last week I got a quote of $55.00 fo a 4 x8 18 gauge. I use a jig saw with a fine blade to cut it so I can get it in my shear. Frank

My local steel supplier has a retail type section where they have 2 x 4 sheets.
I have a skill saw that cuts steel. It is great for breaking sheets down. Do not have a shear.

I really hope I won't be making anything that big!
Right now a 24x24 piece or two is all I need. I dont have the room to store too much of it. On top of that, out here we get RUST!
Now, last year was a different story. I may just order and pay for shipping. The big stuff won't fit in my Jeep.

Normally I just get mild steel 18ga for repair panels and patches. I've got some longer narrow pieces but nothing appropriate for a seat bottom.
I do have one big piece, a stalled front fender repair that I was planning on putting on my extra fender, but I couldn't get the flange just right. Plenty there for a seat bottom though.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest stainless, only to comment on the shipping cost. (The stainless was for my boat.) Had I understood your plan, I could have put a piece of sheet metal in with the seat pan at no extra cost. Next time?

This time of year, I may let them bring it to me. The two hour round trip takes away two hours that I could be working on cars. I love fabricating almost as much as I love working on these cars.
Currently, I have no other fabricating that has to be done (except for the seat pan) until I can roll my 4 into the shop. Even then, I lucked out with the body of this car being so good (or so I think).
There is a floorpan that could stand to be replaced but for the time involved (and my meager skills) buying 1 (or two) already formed might be a way to go. Found a pair for $228 including shipping. That could save me days of work.
