GT6 Early GT6 Wiper Motor Wiring

Just got my wiper motor back from refurbishing. I want to make absolutely sure that everything is plugged in correctly the first time around to avoid possibly damaging the $120 of repairs. Problem is the wiring diagram in the haynes only describes the firewall wires, not the motor wires themselves. They are all white. I believe that at one point there was colored loom on them. One is a little obvious, red. The other appears white, and the third possible yellow or orange. Could the white be green and the orange be brown, and if so, should I just connect each to their matching mate?

It is with great trepidation that I send this to you. I had a similar situation with my motor. Thought I had everything in order so wired it up. Fuse did not blow, but piles of smoke emanated from the wiper motor as I fried its internal bits. Had the professionals rebuild it and reinstall it.

Hope your luck is better than mine.

Workshop manual electrical diagram for wiper motor is attached.

Know your problem well. As much as you are going to hate it, you must strip the wires back about a inch or so to get the correct color.
Good luck.

Stripped them. Theyre still the same mysterious colors. Red (obvious), Orange (possibly brown) and white (?).

I can't help you, but went with the same thing on my TR250, the wire color was at best a guess, don't the colors match up somewhat with the wiring diagram and harness wires, I did a best guess on mine and didn't fry anything.

According to how mine is wired, (68 TR250) the red wire from the motor goes to red/ltgreen on the harness, the Orange (possibly brown) goes to the brown and ltgreen, and the white is probably faded green and goes to the green wire on the harness. Kind of a leap of faith, and I really scritinized the colors under light and from different angles before I hooked them up, good luck!

Thanks, thats what I thought. Its just that we experienced the same thing ArticOne did - had everything connected the way we thought (although I dont remember what that was) and then when I tried it, smoked poured out. Its just possible that the motor was bad. Car was last registered in 93, the grease solidified, and probably a number of other things. The restorer said that the reason was probably because it needed to be cleaned and properly lubricated, which caused it to seize.

So you had no problem with your motor connecting it up that way? Is your motor similar to mine?

What about opening it up and checking how the wires are connected to the motor? I know that is what I would do.

The main thing to avoid is having 12v connected directly across the dropping resistor.

I just checked the motor on our Mk1. Like yours, the cloth braid is gone from the wires so all that remains is white vinyl.

I made some measurements for you. With a multimeter you can repeat these measurements to determine the wire colors but keep in mind that your meter and mine may read a bit differently due to calibration errors. Pay the most attention to the magnitudes of my measurements, not the actual values.

The harness colors are:
Green (solid)
Green/Red, &
Green/Brown.
In my measurements below I will leave out the primary color and focus on the trace (green/green being "green"). The colors I list are the harness colors and what I have remarked my motor wires. The colors are not necessarily what Lucas put on the motor 40+ years ago.

Disconnect the motor from the harness if it is connected. Use the meter to measure between the bullet connectors. DO NOT hold use your finger tips to hold the probes to the bullets as your body would become part of the measurement.

Green to Brown = 8 Ohms
Green to Red = 15 Ohms
Brown to Red = 9 Ohms

If you work through your own point-to-point motor wiring you will be able to identify which wires are which. Green to red will be easy. After that you'll have to pay close attention to which of the other two measurements is higher.

Once you get it sorted, a bit of green and red electrical tape (or liquid vinyl) on the motor wires should make this easier in the future.

Thanks everyone. My husband remembered how to use his voltmeter and confirmed everything. Cant seem to get the wipers to park themselves where I want to though It seems to be random, but I can push em back easily where I want them. Cool thing about these cars being so small: I can reach around and correct them while still sitting in the drivers seat.

So it seems that, yes, its green to green, brown to brown/green and red to red/green. And with all the information posted here, even people whos loom is no longer any color (or existent) will be able to find this thread and get their answer.
