Early Car Question

Will a 1275 engine bolt up to an early smooth case transmission? & will the 1098 carbs work on 1275 engine?

got a guy who wants to keep his old tranny & carbs & put later engine in it - his engine is a good boat anchor & he wants to do it as inexpensively as possible

Tony, the carbs should work just fine with AN needles in them. That was the standard needle for the 1275's.
I'm not certain as to the tranny issue. You may have to use the early back plate, and do some finagling with the clutch pushrod length.
I would think he would just go with the entire 1275 engine/trans to start with. Ribcase trannies are plentiful, and smooth cases are a bear to get parts for.

I have a friend with a Morris Monor with a 948, and it has a ribcase trans, so one would think it would work the other way around. Might have to change the throwout fork or something silly like that. As for the carbs, if the intake gaskets are the same, it will bolt up, but you might want to change the needles.I think a 67 spriget had the solid mounted needles, so the change should be easy. I used to know this stuff, but it has been too many years since I had a fleet of sprigets. Must be getting old or something...

He will need a throw-out arm for a 1275 I think. The smooth case will not live long behind the 1275. He will be looking for a ribcase before long. There is a reason that they changed to the ribcase. You can convert a smooth case to ribcase gears.

I suggested going w/rib case but he wants to do it as inexpensivesly as possible - so, he'll be pulling it again soon...I'll tell him he needs a ribcase fork.

I don't want to confuse things but I just thought this out. he may just need a 1275 throw-out bearing. I had a smoothcase in a bugeye racecar that has ribcase gears, the bellhousing broke soooo, I replaced the whole thing with a ribcase. I think it had a 1275 T.O. bearing but a smoothcase arm. Yeah that sounds right. Far too many racecars around here. Anyone want one?

Tony, the inexpensive way would be to install the ribcase now. When the smooth case goes south, (and it will) it could cause collateral damage.
JR, you givin' race cars away now?
Jeff

I agree & told him so (all of the above about ribcages versus smoothies)...however, he's a college professor who doesn't want to spend the extra $$'s on a ribcage (heck, he's only considering the 1275 because his engine is frozen & its cheaper to drop a used engine in it than to build a new one - he thinks)

Waves hand, I want a car. Oh wait I got one. lol

Tony, what's a good used ribcase going for, 125 bucks?
Penny wise and pound foolish, I'd say.
Oh well. Remember the old yell..."You'll be sorrrrrreeeee!"
Jeff

I know, Jeff...but I told him I'd ask if he could use his smooth case....& I did!

Too bad you're so far away!
