In a similar vein, take a look at the story of Nobile, who tried to use his balloon Italia to reach the pole in 1928.
Balloon crashed in the ice. Eventually even Amundsen tried to rescue, but plane crashed and killed Amundsen.
For days, the Italia sent radio distress signals, but the only person to pick them up was a young man in a rural Russian village, who accidentally heard the signals on a battery powered radio and home-made antenna.
