Earl Scruggs

Was just reading that somewhere else. Another great (that I happen to know about this time), gone.

Scruggs was featured on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Circle album, which I bought when it first came out ('72-'73?). Among lots of other songs, there's a great banjo duet with John McEuen on the song, "Soldier's Joy". Completely hooked me on bluegrass, and at the time I bought a banjo and Scruggs' instruction record and book. Didn't stick with it and sold the banjo. But I've recently bought another, and will be spending part of my retirement learning to play.

National Public Radio is doing a story this morning on him.

Truly a giant.

Sad news, another of the old timers gone.

Yes. Heard it too. Seemed like a real nice man. 88 isn't a bad run, I suppose.

I can't call myself a big fan of bluegrass, but I always loved his picking style. I think I'd need about 20 fingers to even attempt it.

NPR link to Scruggs (there's also an audio link to the radio story).

Godspeed to a great musician. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs together are THE sound most folks think of when someone says"Bluegrass" Specifically Scruggs style banjo pickin'. He defined the 3 finger style.
I'm thankful for the wealth of recordings he's made over the years.

Tried some licks on the banjo, myself, 'cept my fingers are too short and the tips are too blunt on my left hand and not so nimble anymore at my age on the right hand. It's a pity. I should have started much sooner in life. :frown:
