Just removed the entire oil filter set up today ...the bolts were "hand tight" and noticed ther was no gasket between the engine and the base of the filter system????? Is this correct ?

Pete

No. There are several different gaskets for 4.2 engines though, be sure you get the correct one. Some engines have oil coolers (S3 XJ6 for instance) If I remember correctly, it should match the filter housing. (I guess that is obvious, but for some reason I think there is nore to it than that.Sorry I can't be more helpful than that.

Yes, there should be a thin gasket between Head and Block. Make sure you get the correct one, there are different configurations in each of the 2.4, 3.4, 3.8, and 4.2 liter versions.

You need to match the gasket visually. There is no 'standard' gasket. I found out after removing it.

I found one at a local Jaguar engine rebuilder who had different ones in a drawer.

Thank you ..will make a pattern for it and fax it to my local supplier....sheesh...no wonder it was leaking!!!

Thanks again:

Pete

A thin piece of paper (think brown paper shopping bag) and some time with an exacto knife will be all you need... that and a VERY thin film of Hylomar on both sides. Or you could go "all the way" and get gasket paper from NAPA instead.
