E-Type rear suspension...labour intensive?

A customer asked me why it took so much time to assemble an E-Type final drive assembly so I sent him the attached pic. Keep in mind I had already changed the ring and pinion and assembled the brakes.

I think if you ask our man, Basil, he will agree with you 100%.
He's done this job on his own car.

And it took me two years! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I currently doing an e-type. I think that it takes about the same time to do the diff as the motor. Why don't you give it back to him like it is in the picture and see how long it takes to re- assemble? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
Cheers, David.

You are correct about the time it takes to rebuild a final drive assembly. If you add changing the ratio , I believe it takes longer than rebuilding an XK engine. I can rebuild XK engines in my sleep but a final drive assembly is a fight from start to finish.

The job looks spot on! Wonder why he is complaining? The only think different on mine is that I powder coated the "cage".
Cheers, David. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Anyone who thinks rebuilding an EType IRS can be done quickly does not understand Jaguars and probably shouldn't own one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Nice job, the fun part is putting it all back together. The disassembly and cleaning everything up is what gets to me. Just bought another e type, a 69 OTS, its full of holes but retirement is coming next year. Just making sure I have plenty to do.

Hey Marvin, I was in Huntsville a few weeks ago and had hoped to swing down to B'Ham and catch your wife's show, but alas, we kept getting out of work too late to do anything but eat and go to bed. Maybe next time.

Yep, but it sure doesn't take 2 years to do it.--Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

I said it took "me" two years. I admit I took my time and had to do things as I could afford them. I'm sure that someone who has the time and resources to focus only on the rebuild could do it in a week. My point was (and is) that the Jag IRS is not a Chevy rear end and there are a thousand ways to screw it up if one doesn't take their time and do it right.

Basil

Yep,I will buy that and a week is certainly long enough.--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Looks like a heck of a job. That's for sure!

And it isn't even 100% apart in the picture.

Nice work AlanT! We've done the job a bunch of times, and it just never gets any easier. I'd rather do a V-12 rebuild, frankly. Though there's not much on a Jag that's "easy" in any case.

10-4 Dr.E . I'd rather build a V12 engine any day over a 6 cylinder. It takes longer but is much easier.

Alan T

I think I would enjoy a v-12 rebuild rather than my toyota's v-6, but I'll bet it's probably more work.... Just the extra excitemnet factor of building a 12 would do it for me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
