E-type IRS unit

I'm searching for an E-type Independent Rear Suspension unit, and have found a couple of suppliers; but their prices ($3800 - $4500) seem a bit steep. Any references to a complete IRS unit - used or remanufactured?

Thanks,
Sean

If those prices are for reconditioned units, then that's probably not out of line. You might check eBay and also go to Hemmings Motor News and get their great magazine and look in the J Parts For Sale section.

Some other possibilities that come to mind are:

XKs Unlimited, Terry's Jaguar, and Classic Jaguar as possibilities. If you do get one on the cheap that needs rebuilding, expect to pay upwards of $1000 just for parts (I know, I'm rebuilding mine now).
Is this for an EType, or are you building a rod?

At any rate, welcome to the forum!
Basil

You should be able to buy a E-Type IRS for well under $1000. The gear set is a Dana 44, Corvette, Camero, Trans Am, and I just had mine rebuilt including gears , bearings, seals and a new U J yoke for $580. If it's a pre 69 figure on sleeving 4 cylinders, $200 Plus UJ and hub bearings. The inner wishbone bearings are needles and hold up fine the outers are tapered rollers and if not set with the proper pre-load they wont last 1000 miles!
The racing shops have replacements in bronze or a nylon type material. If your going to stay under $2500 you must do the assembly & dis-assembly yourself. Time consuming, not not real hard. That's the worst case scenario as these are pretty tough units and you may do nothing but rebuild the brakes and replace the outer wishbone bearings
Good luck, Bob

If you're buying a used unit, I would highly recommend replacing as much as possible, including shocks, while you have the unit out...that's just my opinion, but its just a lot easier to do it all while its out on the bench.

Bob's right about the setting the pre-load on the outter wishboane bearings (adjusting bearing end-float in the hub carrier). I'd recommend buying "The Complete Official Jaguar "E" published by by Robert Bently, Inc (or similar manual) which describes the process of adjusting the bearing endfloat. (and everything else). (this is something you might consider farming out to a reputable Jag mechanic to set up for you).

The replacement bronze bushes are available also from Classic Jaguar - they sell a complete kit that also replaces the inner wishbone roller bearings. I'm debating replacing mine with these.

Cheers, Basil

Yes, the 4-grand price tag is for a remanufactured unit. A redesigned E-type IRS, offered by Era Replicas, is rather sexy - well worth four-thousand dollars, but I'll have an LS1 & 6speed for my project car ('73 Opel GT) for less than that.

I'd be pleased to find a used unit for under a grand, and will do all the rebuilding work myself - where no specialized equipment is necessary. I'll wait to examine the datails of rebuilding the unit till after I've obtained one and have it interfaced to the GT's unibody frame.

Basil, I'll check each of those resources; thanks.

Oh, by the way, do you know how much torque (maybe 400HP/400lb.ft.) this IRS unit - stock - can withstand (communicate to the ground without breaking)?

Seeing as how it's basically Corvette, Camaro, Trans Am gear set very popular with the hot rod and Cobra replica people, i don't think you'll any problems. That doesn't sound like a 6 cylinder Jag engine to me! Wish you luck!
