E-bay Sprite "Cobra Clone"

Ok, a couple of things now that I've seen the vid. I think the "problem" we all have lies in the fact he called it a clone. I think we need to give this guy a break, he doesn't seem like a bad guy trying to be a shyster. What we have here is seems to be the product of too much "car culture" in mainstream media. All he's doing is incorporating what he's seen, what's excepted and expected; into his life. Think about it for a second, this is the result of almost "everything auto" that's been on TV and ebay. We honestly can't fault the guy for not knowing any better if he doesn't know any better; this is what the magic talking box taught him to say, so he says it. It must be true, the magic talking box told him so.

He reminds me of a well meaning fellow I once met in that area that was very enthusiastic about cars but had little to no background. All the poor fellow knew is what he'd seen and heard on TV. Matter of fact, this could actually be the same guy AND could very easily "be" a member here.

My biggest problem with the whole thing is the Jegs sticker, that's the tell.


There is something Cobraesque about these car's headlights. I don't know if it's the distance they are apart or the fact they mount perpendicular to the ground or proximity to the turn signals but there is something there. Look at one of these properly prepped for racing with the grill removed and you can see it sometimes. I don't see it with this car but maybe I'm too fixated on the sticker.

What I read says "enthusiast", not journalist. Heck, even I qualify to say I'm a professional automotive journalist; after all, it was a national publication and I was paid. :playful: My vote says he's a guy with a go-pro and a dream who takes other people's stuff on "test drives" and perhaps without their knowledge of his "reviews".

It's wrong on so many different levels I can't even begin to explain. I'd almost believe the whole things is an intentional spoof but the music video has me believing otherwise.
 
The price is what blows me away, especially after seeing the video, all those holes in the dash, the horn and turn signals looked like they were dash switches as well, actually the turn signals that might be right for this year of Sprite (I don't recall exactly when they switched), but I am pretty sure the horn should work of the push in the middle of the steering wheel. I am not expecting everybodies car to be perfect, but the asking price is all the money in the world for a 1098 Box Sprite, at that price would think more things would be working as designed, not cobbled up.

His review of the car on YouTube was like a high school kid struggling to come up with 500 words for an essay the night before it's due... The vent windows, the door latches, the extra room to add stuff in the dash... Priceless tire kicker review
 
He probably came up with the $12,950 ask based on the prices that Square Sprites draw at the Barrett Jackson auctions. Relative to those prices, his ask doesn't seem too outrageous. But, the Barrett Jackson pricing isn't grounded in the everyday reality of automobile classifieds. Also, the Barrett Jackson offerings tend to be fairly pristine examples, not ones with do-it-yourself electrics and holes left over "to add your own stuff".

He doesn't come off as a bad guy...just not as knowledgeable about these cars as he could be. I'm half tempted to reach out to him so he could compare his Sprite to Baby Blue.

Perfect analogy! ... I love it! ... and research done via Google rather than years of gathered knowledge. That car is not in that great of shape either... quite shop worn actually... and how is doing donuts in gravel and leaves a selling point? The only unique thing about it was the wavy grille.
