just finishing up a valve job and installed a dw header.the problem now is that i can't get the carb heat shield on ,is it necessary or should i cut it to try to make it fit .it can't pass through the steering column

Hi RC,
I think you should keep the heat shield. If it’s the original, remember there is asbestos, protect yourself.

As an aside, add the model car you have to your profile, this will help with some of the answers you get. (Depending on the question of course.) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif With Greg, rc157. My vague memory seems to suggest that you may have to fabricate an entirely new piece that extends horizontally over the top of the header pipes.---Fwiw---Keoke?

rc157,i agree with gegw and keoke, theres plenty enought heat in and around that engine without inviting it to come closer to your carbs fuel mixture, get a couple pieces cardboard, pizza boxes are my favorite for this, and make yourself a template,by trial and error you should be able to come up with a suitable configuration, once established, transfure the shape onto a piece of sheet metal of appropriate guage, cut, bend, shape etc, dont forget to align the bolt holes as close as you can get them, nothing looks so bad as parts that fit with missaligned or elongated bolt holes,u can doooo it! oh and dont forget to first scrape all the melted cheese of the box first. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

rc-
I've got the DW header and opted to keep the heat shield.
I bought another heat shield and rebent it by first making the new one flat and then basically bending it in the oppposite direction. I had some of the insulation material left over from another project. The rivets are available. Took a while, but it looks great, and I still have the original heat shield.

rc157,i just went through ebay "austin healey parts and acc" found 3 carb head shields, starting at $19.00,migth be a good idea if ya want to keep the original intact. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
