Actually, I believe they were an off white originally, but don't ask me to prove it. Personally, if I bother to paint them, I use Machinists Gray - looks like a new casting.
Bill is close. I use a colour they call "cast blast". Looks like new cast metal as your bits return from the machine shop. No probel with heat, etc and last years.
