Duncan Black's racing SP250 on eBay?

FWIW;
Wow, the only Duncan Black I ever heard of is the one who writes the current online Blog titled "Eschaton".
Tosh

The evidence described in the listing is a little skimpy but the dates & places sound right, as does the serial number. Since much of the value in the car is a result of its history, if you're thinking of buying it you should contact the owner & discuss concerns.

Is there a club or forum for SP250's? I'd think his car or cars would be pretty well known there.

Be careful, the seller has 0 feedback.

The car is -or was- listed here in the free classifieds.
coldplugs-the only "club" that I know for for Daimlers of any kind is the DLOC-NA, & they would only know anything if the owner had been a member. With a total production of about 2,400 for worldwide distribution, there are too few to generate any local marque club interest. As an aside, it was watching Duncan Black race at Lake Garnett, KS that motivated me to sell my 1300 Alfa and buy a used SP250 in 1961.

I love it! The absolute best race I ever saw was at Lime Rock about the same year and I guess the tables were reversed. Reed Rollo (in an Alfa Veloce) & Duncan Black ran nose to tail every lap, with Black passing Rollo every lap on the straight about 50 yards before the start/finish line. Rollo would catch up braking for the hairpin at the end, and pass him again in the esses.

Things continued like this until the last lap, when Rollo beat him by just a few feet to the S/F line and won the event. At the time we had a Giulietta (although non-Veloce) so were happy with the outcome.

That was then, of course. I've seen a few well restored SP-250's in recent times and they sure seem like fun - great sound, too.

You might try www.dlcentre.com they're a great resource for Daimler owners. The on-line community has a great deal of information concerning Daimlers. They were a great help to me with my 1952 Consort.

Thanks folks.
I learned a lot from your replies and links.

No, I was not looking to buy the SP250.
The ad was brought to my attention by a friend (beginning the restoration of a Berkeley) who was with me back in the Marlboro race track days and had seen Duncan Black and all those others race.

Thanks again.
Jim

A brave person, your friend.

He probably knows already, but you might want to mention the 50th anniversary event for Berkeleys that's scheduled for July 9 in Cincinnati. Also, he should be aware of the Berk forum on Yahoo.

I like the Daimlers... but besides here and wirewheel.com I haven't ever seen one. They must be pretty rare?

I have a "encyclopedia of american automobiles" - from 1930 to around 1995. BIG book with lots of history and pictures of almost every model - including the rare one's... and production numbers and options for each year... Something like 850 pages - hard-bound - paid over $60 for it new... I'd love to have something like that for euopean cars too - got any leads on something like that?

A good topic on its own, I think. Rather than take this thread in a non-Daimler direction I'll start a topic in the Pub section. Hope that's ok.

One of my earliest sport car moments...

In 1964, at the tender age of 15, with a fascination for anything I ever saw in Road & Track, growing up in rural Maryland, an ivory Daimler SP250 pulled into a gas station where I was putting air in the front tire of my trusty Schwinn runabout. For some reason, it did not have a bonnet and, as I kneeled by it at the pump island, I craned my neck over to see the polished SU's and other engine paraphenalia about which I had not a clue. All the while I was keeping the airhose on the tire. I gaped like the hick kid that I was. The guy finished gassing it up, paid for his fuel and blasted out of there. I was gob-smacked and didn't say a word. Then I looked back at my front tire and there was a black bubble the size of an eggplant bulging out of the rim, a second later, the tube blew with a noise you could hear all over town. Left me sitting on my ass wondering what the heck just happened.

I wonder if it was Duncan Black??

He was kind enough to send it along...I've admired the Special Sports for a long time, but never had enough brass to own one. Perhaps a little cosmetic surgery on Dama Enda would be an approximation????? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

hehehehehe - The only time I was ever gobsmacked that bad was when I saw my (future) wife - 3 years later we were married. Gonna celebrate our 4 year anniversary this August. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I hope I'm still talking about it like this 30 years from now!
