Dum dum

I think it's called Dum dum. What is used to seal the fenders and quarter panels when putting them back on. What is the thickness used? And what is the procedure? I am losely bolting the car together to get it painted. After painting then what? Take them off, apply dum dum, press stainless steel bead in place, then try to put the fenders on without scratching, chipping the paint? Yikes! Any suggestions?

I'm interested to hear what others recommend here as my car is getting the final prep before painting right now. The current plan is to paint the flanges (along with the backsides of the fenders/shrouds) and then mount everything back on the structure for final painting of the outside surfaces. Several weeks after painting, use electrical tape on the fender bead tabs to protect the paint as they are slid into position, remove the tape and tighten the fender fasteners. No Dum Dum, tape or anything else because the flange surfaces will be paint on paint. My thinking on this is that anything between the surfaces will just help hold water, grime, etc in there. Alum. to steel problems shouldn't occur because of the protective layers of primer and paint. ??

Cheers,
John

John, seems we are both getting ready for paint. I recently purchased my car. When dismating it, there was dum dum used. It would be so much easyer to not use it in putting it back together, for it was a bear to remove. I'm finding many things off from the previous owner. I'm trying to have a correct Healey, and doing things the way they are suppose to be done. My contact serfaces will be painted also. I'm told the dum dum is used to make it water tight. Seems it will act as a buffer for noise also. Maybe there was no dum dum? It's a learn as I go. Looking forward to answers from those in the know here.

Hi All, Dum Dum Is the correct name for the sealer originally used on the cars. Failure to reinstall it in all the places required will cause the car to leak water like you wouldn't beleive. Most auto stores or paint supply houses sell both black and white "Ford" strip "Caulking" that can be used in place of Dum Dum.--FWIW---Keoke

Hi Keoke,
I was planning to use Dum Dum to seal the trunk (shroud to boot pan) and also on the Shroud to super structure area. Seam sealer in all the other usual frame seams. I'm not concerned if the fender/shroud flange leaks or will the water work it's way into the interior?

Thanks,
John

Hi John, Yes you will get water in the interior of the car unles you pay close attention to the shroud/Windscreen area as well as that Chrome strip on top of the rear shroud.---Keoke

Or just make sure you don't drive it in the rain which is easy in AZ. The only "leaks" I get is from the inside out sweating to death in the summer time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Chuck, I told ju U should move up to Prescott nice in cool up there. Just reset the carbs before you tackel Yarnel.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi Keoke,
That probably be the first long road trip I take when I get my overdrive situation figured out or I could take the back way through Wickenburg. When I am ready for that, I will definately ask you about tips on adjusting the carbs. My wife and I spent a long weekend in Prescott last summer in a B&B and loved it. It's been a while since I have been there and forgot how beautiful it is. Unfortunately, I will be working here in Phoenix for quite a while.
Chuck

OK guys, I think we may have strayed from my second question about dum dum. What is the best way to apply it? Try to squeez it between the fender and body by separating them? Or take the fenders off?
