Duke Ellington recording - stereo 1932

Back in 1987 I was listening to NPR and heard a segment on "recently discovered" 1932 recordings by RCA of the Duke Ellington orchestra.

No big deal *except* the recordings were actually a kind of "stereo" recording. One performance, with two different microphone and recording systems. No one apparently knows if RCA meant these to be stereophonic recordings, or just a "back up" in case one machine failed during the performances.

Play the two recordings together, and you hear "stereophonic" sound.

Anyway, I recorded the actual NPR broadcast, with the guys who explained what they found and played some examples.

Has anyone else heard that story?

What ever happened to the recordings?

I've searched various LP and CD forums and websites with very few positive results. There are probably legal issues involved regarding who holds copyright on the masters, and thus prevents further public commercial pressings. There are few websites with some examples of that same 1932 Ellington session, but heaven help you if you try to find the CD the samples come from.

Believe me - my home made recording of the NPR broadcast is way better than that album on LiveLeak. Unfortunately, my recording includes just the short examples used in the NPR broadcast - not the full recording of any of the compositions. Mood Indigo, Hot and Bothered, Creole Love Call, etc.

Just wondered if anyone else remembers that story.

Thanks.
