Just so 30+ years later people could agree to disagree

Blacked out rear ends were to hide all the soot and carbon that collects on there even brand new they did that!
I like 'em body colour myself.

During that period of time, alot of the high performance domestic cars had some sort of flat black paint on them...mostly on the hoods (bonnets). The flat back was put on the rear of the TR6 as a bit of understated arrogance...the TR6 had to be in FRONT of you to see it.

It's interesting that all of the Triumph models of that period had similar rear styling, but I think that only the TR6 and the Dolomite Sprint and HL had black rear panels. I wonder why they didn't do that to the Stag, Spitfire, 2000, 2.5PI, GT6 and the other small saloons.

I could be mistaken, but I seem to recall that back when the spit still had the chrome trim ring around the back end, it was painted black back there too. I mean, I'm not sure if it was standard like the TR-6's, but I recall seeing several painted that way.

It was originally designated to be matte black to make the car look wider.

That's why I don't like to wear matte black pants

Ok, well I did a google image search and think I need to retract that about the spits hind end getting the black paint treatment... because I can't find one single image of that. Funny how the mind recalls things though aint it?

Your mind isn't totally gone. For the 1972 model year -- and possibly only for US models, which might explain why there was always body color paint under the taillamps -- the rear valence between the bootlid and lower trim strip WAS painted a matte black. I think it helped people think they were going faster somehow...since that was the year the horsepower dropped down to about 48 from the previous 60 (hence the rush to get the 1500 into US models in '73)!

Karmann, the German design folks who did the TR6 did the black treatment to define the back of the car and add width optically. The cars were always narrow and the front and rear treatment by Karmann was a pretty good trick. Doesn't explain why many of the early TR7s were given the same treatment though.

Right on and thanks for that! Gonna go wipe the IN off the front of my SANE stamp now...

No, not your car, Bill. It doesn't qualify.

It just works on mine, BobbyD's, Al's and TR6 Bill's.
