Dual SU Manifold Water Pipe Repair

The 1.5 SU manifold water line was totally rusted. I bored out and threaded the ends for a brass fitting made from pipe on the lathe. I was not real happy how the threading worked out so I used some "Miracle-Weld Aluminum solder paste. I'm not so sure it will hold water.

Anyone else been here or have some words of encouragement for the first fire-up that is on the horizon? (Someday)

We're going to switch this to the Spridget Forum as MGB's don't use the same setup...&, over there, I'm gonna wonder how water goes through a dual SU intake manifold!
 
I looked at one a while back and always thought I could cut it off and tap the hole with an NPT tap (Maybe 1/4 or 3/8) and than install a standard NPT threaded fitting. (did this to my Aluminum valve cover to convert it to AN)

I also tapped some of the BSPP threaded fittings on my water pump with a 3/8 npt tap becasue the npt fittings are more readlity available. The BSPP is actually the same side and thread count just npt has a taper to it so they dont thread in enough. All holding up very well!
 
I'm assuming you mean the water line that pre-heats the intake manifold.
This feature can help make the car run better when it's cold.
Otherwise, it's really not needed.

And, when the car is warm, it still warms up the air in the manifold, which has the effect of slightly reducing air density (and power)

If it were my car (and I lived in Texas), I'd eliminate it from the cooling curcuit (just hook the two pipes that go into each end of the manifold together.

This is a good feature if you live in a colder climate.
 
Thanks for the replies, I pondered running without it so now me thinks bypassing the manifold preheat line is the best course. I was wondering if it would keep the temp down in the Texas heat driving at idle/rush hour speeds. I'll post more as I progress. I rebushed the SU's and have them reassembled last night.

Hey Scott, where did you get the front air dam? Is it glass or urethane? I'd like to fit one under my RB.

Spridgetech, it is designed t work with their front fenders, it is fiberglass flared fenders. The may make a air dam to use with stock fender, but I don't know for sure. I use the same bodywork as Scott's on a customer's racing Midget

I bought a rebuilt 1500 dual SU manifold from Rimmer for my Spitfire. They run a cutter through the manifold to remove the old rusted tube remnants. A new stainless insert is then installed (loose). A notch/drilling is cut into the bottom and a set screw holds the stainless tube in place.
 
So for racing would it be any advantage to run separate cooler lines to a pump through an ice box? Maybe for the last half of a sprint race to cool the intake?

You not the first one to think of that, actually rules prohibit it, but I tip my hat to you for thinking of it :smile:
 
Cooler boxes, Sell em at jegs Summit The usually source. But yes most everyone prohibits it.

Last I checked Spridgetech does make an air dam like mine for use with stock fenders. Very low. Mine scrapes everytime I pull it out of the driveway without angling the car all the way to one side. But Im a bit lower than stock in the front too.
