Dual-Element Fuel Pump Saves the Day

Yesterday was a great "Healey day" here in Portland. I got up and strapped on the BJ8 and went for a drive to a garage elsewhere in town where I store a couple of other cars. Swapped the BJ8 for one of those (OK, it was a 1976 Porsche 914) and drove that to a friend's shop where "my other 100" is currently residing. Took that car out for a drive as part of its lengthy shake-down after the restoration.

Well, everything was going very well until I found myself waiting at a traffic light at a busy intersection. Pulled away when the light turned green, and coasted to a stop on the far side of the intersection, apparently the victim of fuel starvation. But no problem! I reached into the battery compartment and flipped the toggle switch, changing which side of my dual-element fuel pump was in action, and away I went!

What a beautiful feeling. What would normally have been a ruined Healey driving day with a tow and the all the frustration, was instead a great day, with the car running strong all way the back to the shop later that day.

I bought the dual-element fuel pump from Moss Motors about 15 years ago, and even though it was expensive, it has now more than earned its keep. Here's a photo of my other 100, taken just yesterday:

That is a gorgeous car!

I got to see my Healey yesterday too; still parked in a neighbors garage at the condo we moved from a few months ago. At one time, I was putting a car into three different neighboring condo garages, not including our own (all at the same time; it looked like a BMW dealership's satelite office). That had a lot to do with why we went house shopping...

Well Keoke, I've done the hammer bit. Got the t-shirt. Not interested to do it again.

As for when I go to switch again, I will have fixed the inoperative side of the pump in the warm and dry workshop, returning both sides to full operational condition at the time and place of my choosing. That's the beauty of it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

It's a Lucas pump. I don't know where else it might have been used. It was expensive as fuel pumps go, but well worth it considering the frustration and inconvenience that it saved.
