Drum retaining screws

Somewhere on a thread I cant find, someone mentioned replacing the brake drum retainer screws with allen or torx head. McMaster-Carr only has Philips and slot in 1/4-28 and they offer 82 or 100 degree bevel.

Anyone know which is the correct bevel and where to get allen or torx head?

I found matching screws down at local True Value HArdware Store. They stocked PosiDrive Drum Screws. Drum Screws and bolts on Door Hinges are PosiDrive and an Impact Screwdriver gets them loose.
 
I found some hex heads at ACE Hardware for 60 cents each. I don't know about where ya'll live, but in the Dallas area "real" hardware stores are few and far between.

Try Elliot's at Park and Coit in Plano or Turner's hardware on Josey in Farmer's Branch. Elliot's is fading from its glory days as the "hardware store that sells hardware", but they have all sorts of stuff that I have ended up using on my Bugeye projects.
 
We have Farmers Blacksmith here in Escalon where you buy your nuts and bolts by the pound! I used Gerard's list to buy all the nuts and bolts for the car. I think I spent $ 12

Elliot's (ACE) is the one I was referring to. I live in Frisco, town of about 115,000 just north of Dallas, no real hardware store. Lots of Lowes and HD, but that's it. Elliot's is about 15 miles ~30 minutes. They have pretty much everything as long as you are willing to PAY. I will have to check out Turners sometime.

P.S. Mike, I will call you tomorrow, been a crazy week that was supposed to be slow.
 
Question?? why would you change the screws? they came with the Phillips head, are we thinking theft deterent? So many questions?

The originals were not Philips, they were pozidriv. The previous people who worked on my car didn't know that either, most of the heads were "bugered up". As long as I was going to replace them, why not use something with a decent head. The front's are really only decorative, the rear ones maintain the rear axle oil seal when the wheel is off.

One less thing to fight with when working on the brakes. A lot of the fasteners on the Sprite were actually pozidriv.
 
David, McMaster sells tons of allen flat heads. I suspect you didn't find them because the link you posted above was for "machine screws". That is going to take you to slotted and phillips head screws.

Go back and search for "socket head cap screws" then browse the flat head category. One example is their part number 91253A301. That is a 3/8" long, allen cap, 1/4-28, flat, head with black oxide finish.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the "standard" inch size flat-head angle is 82 degrees. Metric uses 90 degrees. There are others as you noticed, the wider angled heads are often used on sheet metal applications but they are less common.
 
Allen head for sure if you use them at all, they are not really needed, and can be completely deleted if desired. This is one of those fasteners on our cars that lends you to ponder, what were they actually thinking :smile:

Hap, I was actually looking for them per your advice. Not so much for the drums but for the rear axle oils seals. And, yes I hate Phillips/pozidriv heads for anything that really needs to be tight.
