Driving weather!

cool pics and astonishing that we have no snow at all in Toronto

I put a metal roof on about 4 years ago and we have not had a big snow like this since then. That is why I am kind of freaked out at how the snow is doing as it oozes down the roof. Most people around here have regular asphalt shingle roofs and the snow stays pretty much stuck until it melts away. Some more pictures of the front of the house and the snow hanging off. It really looks Christmasy like that.

Hey Kim,

I think you need to wrinkle paint your roof!

I don't think that would help. There are thousands of screw heads and the ice just melts around it. It seems to be moving at about an inch an hour. I made troughs on the ground rather than gutters. I am glad of that now or the gutters would be most likely torn loose.

Great pictures, Kim!

That roof is doing just what it is supposed to do. We've got lots of metal roofs here in Utah. The snow will slide, but that way it won't dam up and leak. It will ice up, but that motion will keep it from building up too large on the roof. Just be careful, as it all may give way at once and you'll have quite the slide. Friends of mine with a metal roof will go out and force the slide so that it goes when they want it to, rather than at a bad moment (such as when someone is standing under it).

We're planning on putting a metal roof on our place in a few years.

We have a steel roof on our house and garage. To keep it from sliding off in a huge avalanche, I use a roof rake on it.

A thought -- find a long stick or pole and keep that handy for freeing that snow. Controlled slide = good, random slides = maybe bad!

If you want the snow to stay put, install 'snow guards'. Comercial properties use them on metal and slate roofs to prevent gutter damage and lawsuits from injured patrons.

Sunny and in the 60's today!!! Didn't get a chance to drive as I was having fun with the fam all day. Saw Fantastic Mr. Fox again and went for a hike along a beautiful creek.

Crystal clear and 38°... time to find my Russian Army furry hat!

Ps. Honestly not trying to rub it in to all you guys who are not blessed with such nice winter weather. You can't hardly drive here during the day from May to late September. I am just genuinely excited.

I had to move a few of the cars around this weekend and that meant I had to drive the bugeye over to the shop in the snow. I am pretty impressed at how capable it is.

That's a nice little parade you've got there, Steve.

I'm having crazy dreams about driving around in the snow on Christmas in the MG TD to look at Christmas lights. That would be fun.

If you've got clean roads (no salt), I'd say go for it! Would be a great mini-adventure.

73 miles this afternoon, clear skies, mid 50's, and Erica didn't have to tow me home with her Miata. All in all a good day.
